Age records in Formula 1 rarely fall, and Vettel’s has stood for 16 years. This year it has a real challenger. Here is the full top 10 list, how each champion got there, and where Antonelli would fit.

Who is the youngest F1 world champion?

Vettel holds the record. He clinched the 2010 drivers’ title at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix finale, with his fifth win of that season, at 23 years and about 4 months. Sources differ by a day on his exact age, so we use years and months below.

What the top 10 tells us

A few patterns stand out when you read the table side by side:

  • Four of the ten were younger than 25. Vettel, Hamilton, Alonso and Verstappen all won before that birthday, and every one of them did it in the 21st century.
  • Five of the ten won since 2005. Alonso, Hamilton, Vettel, Verstappen and Norris account for half the list, so the modern era is producing young champions at a steady rate.
  • Three teams appear twice. Red Bull (Vettel, Verstappen), McLaren (Hamilton, Norris) and Lotus (Fittipaldi, Clark) each have two drivers in the top 10.

Antonelli would be the first Mercedes driver on the list.

The stories behind the top four

Vettel, 2010. The record came at the season finale in Abu Dhabi, where he won to take the title.

Hamilton, 2008. Hamilton secured the championship at the Brazilian Grand Prix by passing Timo Glock in the dying laps, according to Formula 1. At 23 years and about 9 months, he was about five months older than Vettel was when he won in 2010.

Alonso, 2005. The Spaniard clinched at Interlagos with two races still to run, which makes him the only driver in the top four who won the title early.

Verstappen, 2021. The Dutchman also settled his first title in Abu Dhabi, at 24 years and about 2 months.

Notice the pattern: Vettel, Hamilton and Verstappen all settled their titles at the final race of the year. Records like this are usually decided late.

Where would Kimi Antonelli rank?

Antonelli was born on August 25, 2006, so he is 20 years old. If he clinches the 2026 championship, he would be about 20 years and 2 to 3 months old, depending on the race. That is more than three years younger than Vettel, and he would go straight to the top of this list.

He leads the standings by 102 points after Singapore, with 340 to Russell’s 238. Our 2026 standings page has the full table, and the Antonelli title guide explains how the title could be decided. If you are new to how points are awarded, read our F1 points system explained first.

Antonelli’s other age records

The title would be the next one in a growing list:

  • Youngest championship leader. He took the lead of the standings after the Japanese Grand Prix at 19 years, 7 months and 4 days, according to Motorsport Magazine.
  • Youngest polesitter. According to his Wikipedia entry, he took pole in China and beat Vettel’s mark by nearly two years.
  • Second-youngest race winner. The same entry says he became the second-youngest Grand Prix winner with his victory in China.

He finished third in Singapore, as we covered in our Singapore results report, and the next chance to extend his lead is this weekend in Austin. Session times are in our Austin 2026 schedule.
