WEC 6 Hours of Barcelona: Toyota Wins and Takes the Title

The No. 7 Toyota GR010 Hybrid Hypercar on track at Spa-Francorchamps

Toyota won the 6 Hours of Barcelona and sealed its eighth FIA World Endurance Championship manufacturers’ title in 14 seasons. The No. 8 car of Sebastien Buemi, Brendon Hartley and Ryo Hirakawa led a 1-2 finish.

The race ran in rain, then drying conditions, then full dry weather. Toyota’s Hypercars were never seriously challenged once the No. 8 took the lead on the opening lap.

The result

The No. 7 Toyota of Kamui Kobayashi, Nyck de Vries and Mike Conway finished second, 0.583 seconds behind its sister car. The No. 50 Ferrari AF Corse completed the podium, 39.725 seconds back.

Buemi won on his 100th race start. It was the No. 8 crew’s second win in a row and their third of the season.

What Buemi said

“It is an amazing day,” Buemi said. “Last year, we suffered a lot, but we came back as a team with an upgraded car, and won four races, including Le Mans with the sister car. Now we can give our very best at Monza.”

How the six hours unfolded

The race started in rain, and the No. 8 Toyota took the lead on the opening lap. The track dried through the afternoon, and the Toyotas stayed in front across both safety car periods, including the final one roughly four hours in.

Both Toyota cars completed 198 laps. That kind of day is what separates a six-hour race from a sprint: the winning car does not have to be fastest in any single hour, only present and reliable at the end.

Genesis took pole, then lost the race on lap one

Genesis Magma Racing had qualified on pole, a first for the team in Hypercar. Its two cars ran 1-2 into the first corner with Dani Juncadella leading, and the breakthrough result ended there.

What is still to be decided

Only the two Toyota crews can now win the Hypercar drivers’ championship. The season finale is at Monza next month.

Toyota’s eighth manufacturers’ title in 14 seasons arrived with a round still to run, which is the result of putting both cars in front and keeping them there for six hours.

Manthey Porsche won the LMGT3 class. Endurance racing mixes classes on the same track at once, which is why a slower car can still win its own contest. Our guide to the 24 Hours of Le Mans explains how that works.

Where the rest of the field ended up

BMW M Team WRT had a mixed afternoon. Its No. 15 crew pushed hard after the final safety car but could only manage seventh. The sister car failed to score at all: the team stayed out during the first virtual safety car period while the rest of the field pitted, and a tire pressure problem then left Sheldon van der Linde, Rene Rast and Robin Frijns on the back foot for the rest of the race.

That contrast is the story of a six-hour race in one line. One crew made a call that cost it a lap of track position, and no amount of pace afterwards could undo it.

The round in context

Barcelona was the seventh round of the 2026 FIA World Endurance Championship, run from October 16 to 18 at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya in Montmelo, Spain. The result left one round on the calendar.

The finale at Monza still has the Hypercar drivers’ title to settle between the two Toyota crews. A championship that looked open when the season started now comes down to a straight fight inside one garage. Our guide to the 24 Hours of Le Mans explains how endurance teams balance two drivers’ championships inside one car.
