The 2026 MotoGP standings are about as tight as a title fight gets. Jorge Martin leads Marc Marquez 355 to 353 after round 17 of 22 in Indonesia, and only five rounds remain. Marquez cut the gap to two points with a double win at Motegi, and Martin kept the lead by finishing on the podium at Mandalika while Marquez ended up sixth.

This guide gives you the current table, a short recap of the last two rounds, what each rider needs, and the dates that matter for the run-in. It is written for US fans, so the format is simple and every number comes from official or major motorsport sources.

Points are from Crash.net’s standings after the Indonesian Grand Prix. Bezzecchi is third, 46 points behind Martin, so the title is a two rider fight on the numbers.

What happened at Motegi

Round 16 in Japan was Marquez’s weekend. He won both the sprint and the Grand Prix, took the lead from Martin before the finish and closed the points gap to two. Bezzecchi finished third in the Sunday race. Marquez is the defending champion and a seven time world champion, and he said afterward that he would attack at every remaining circuit.

The win mattered because he had lost ground in Austria the round before. Motegi put him back in the fight.

What happened at Mandalika

Round 17 in Indonesia went to Marco Bezzecchi, his first win since Mugello. Raul Fernandez was second for Trackhouse Aprilia and Martin was third, 6.890 seconds behind the winner. Marquez won the sprint on Saturday but finished sixth on Sunday, 10.778 seconds back.

Martin took 16 points and Marquez took 10 in the Grand Prix, so the lead stayed at two points. Aprilia machines, including the Trackhouse bikes, took the first four places in the Grand Prix, which shows how strong the RS-GP26 is.

How the MotoGP points system works

MotoGP awards points in two races each weekend. The Sunday Grand Prix pays 25 points for a win, 20 for second and 16 for third, down to one point for 15th place. The Saturday sprint pays points to the top nine finishers, with 12 for the winner. Because both races count, a rider can pick up points on Saturday even after a poor Sunday, which is why a two point gap can change hands quickly.

What each title contender needs

Martin has the lead and the form on Aprilia machinery. He has said he feels faster and faster and that the team now has a fix for each problem he finds. He does not need to win every race, but he must stay close to Marquez on Sundays.

Marquez has more titles and more experience in tight fights. He has been the stronger rider in sprints, with wins at Motegi and Mandalika. His task is to turn Saturday speed into Sunday wins, because the Grand Prix pays much more than the sprint.

Bezzecchi is a long shot at 46 points back, but he is the rider most likely to take points off both leaders when he wins, as he did in Indonesia.

The five rounds left
