Who is on pole for the Mexico City Grand Prix?

Lewis Hamilton took pole in Mexico City for Ferrari with a 1:16.514, just 0.009 seconds ahead of George Russell. Charles Leclerc was third and Max Verstappen fourth. When is the Mexico City Grand Prix 2026?

The race is on Sunday, November 1, over 71 laps. Qualifying is on Saturday, October 31, at 5 p.m. ET. It is not a sprint weekend. U.S. clocks go back at 2 a.m. on November 1, so Friday and Saturday sessions are on daylight time and the race is on standard time.

Can Antonelli clinch the title in Mexico City?

Yes. After the United States Grand Prix, Antonelli leads the standings on 365 points, with Russell on 242 and Hamilton on 241. Five races remain, none of them a sprint, so 125 points are still available. Only Russell (up to 367) and Hamilton (up to 366) can still pass him; Verstappen, Leclerc and Norris cannot.

After Mexico City, four races (100 points) will remain. Antonelli is champion if he then leads both Russell and Hamilton by more than 100 points. A top-eight finish is enough whatever they do: if either rival wins, his lead would still be at least 102 points. Below eighth, the outcome depends on what Russell and Hamilton score and on the tiebreaker (most race wins). Standings are from formula1.com, and the clinching math is our calculation, assuming 25 points for a win and no sprint points. At 20, a title would make Antonelli the youngest champion in F1 history; see our list of the youngest F1 world champions.

What could happen on Sunday? Three scenarios

These are our predictions, built from the official standings and results, not a forecast model.

Scenario 1: Antonelli clinches on Sunday

Our prediction: the most likely outcome. Antonelli has won nine of the 18 races this season, including the United States Grand Prix from pole, and the bar is only a top-eight finish. Even a win for Russell or Hamilton would leave his lead above 100 points.

Scenario 2: A Mercedes one-two

If Antonelli wins and Russell is second, his lead over Russell grows to 130 points (123 + 25 − 18). If Russell wins and Antonelli is second, the lead is still 116 (123 + 18 − 25). Either way the title is settled with more than 100 points in hand. Our prediction: a Mercedes one-two is plausible, but it is not needed to decide the title.

Scenario 3: The title goes to Brazil

The only route is a very bad day: Antonelli fails to score while Russell or Hamilton wins. His lead would drop to 98 or 99 points, with 100 still available, and the fight would move to São Paulo on November 8. Our prediction: the least likely outcome, because it needs a retirement or a penalty on his side and a win on theirs.

Why is the Mexico City circuit so unusual?

The Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez sits more than 2 kilometers (over 1.2 miles) above sea level, according to Formula 1. The thin air changes how the cars work. It reduces drag, so maximum-downforce wing packages have less effect than at other circuits, and it makes cooling and power delivery a key challenge for the engine and the brakes (see Audi F1 and Mercedes). Mercedes describes the effect as running a Monaco-level wing for Monza-level downforce, with some of the highest top speeds of the season.

What to watch on the lap

  • The run to Turn 1: more than 800 meters from the grid to the first corner, the longest on the calendar, according to Audi F1. Trips across the gravel on lap one are common.
  • Turn 4: it follows the second-longest straight, with braking to under 100 km/h, so side-by-side moves are almost a guarantee (Audi F1).
  • The stadium section: Turns 12 to 17 run through the Foro Sol, and Turn 13 inside the stadium is the slowest point on the lap (Audi F1, Mercedes).

What happened in Mexico City last year?

Lando Norris won the 2025 race for McLaren, ahead of Charles Leclerc (Ferrari) and Max Verstappen (Red Bull). Oliver Bearman was fourth and Oscar Piastri fifth; Kimi Antonelli finished sixth, George Russell seventh and Lewis Hamilton eighth (official 2025 result). The circuit also has title history: Mercedes notes that Hamilton clinched his fourth and fifth world titles here in 2017 and 2018.

Antonelli won the United States Grand Prix from pole, 13.078 seconds ahead of Leclerc, with Verstappen third. Russell finished eighth and Hamilton fourth, which kept the title open. Read the full US Grand Prix results 2026.
